Copyright Overview and Controlled Digital Lending / Alma Digital. Allen Jones, the New School.

Starting with copyright basics of fair use and first sale, this discussion will focus on the principle of own:loan, CDL lending policies and how to explain these services are delivered through the controlled digital lending platform within Alma-D.  Currently, the Alma-D version focuses on the course reserves scenario, where physical items are sequestered behind a circulation desk for a long-term while the digital object is circulated.  More recent development has focused on longer-term circulation.  The NISO CDL Working Group has created other scenarios for general circulation and interlibrary lending.  This presentation will outline those models and illustrate how to have conversations with institutional legal counsels on reducing risk as CDL services become more in-demand.

Understanding Copyright Functionality in Leganto. Kirsten Clark, University of Minnesota.

In looking at copyright needs within Ex Libris systems, Leganto provides several ways in which libraries can use and share copyrighted materials within reading lists and courses.  Underlying these options are features that integrate with the Copyright Clearance Center (CCC) and Paypal, as well as configurations that libraries can use to support their own copyright practices for better efficiencies.  This presentation will highlight current uses of Leganto for copyrighted materials as well as discuss areas identified in recent ELUNA Leganto Product Working Group surveys and town halls, where functionality could be improved for better workflows and interoperability.

Copyright in Rapido.  Christopher Lee, California State University (CSU).

Processing copyright is a major part of the Borrowing workflow for any Resource Sharing unit in North America. Rapido has a growing set of tools available for processing copyright. This presentation will examine out of the box Rapido copyright functions concerning CONTU, useful analytics, and available cloud app integrations.

Copyright Highlights/ RapidILL.  Troy Christenson, University of Texas at Arlington Libraries.

History of Copyright Law, Fair Use, CONTU Guidelines, Borrowing, Academic Risk Assessment, Multiple Requests, Creative Commons, ILL Tracking, Documentation, Protection, Internet Access, Open Access, e-Books, and Counting

Panel and Audience Questions. All speakers.

Presenters will summarize their thoughts from today’s presentations and provide an opportunity for attendees to ask their own questions on copyright and interoperability within the reviewed systems.
