From Shelf Ready to Already Shelved: Streamlining Copy Cataloging in Alma. Marcus Jun, San Francisco State University.

Shelf ready books are exactly that: ready to be shelved. Then why do they sit on the copy cataloging shelf, waiting to be cataloged? Can't we make these books available without delay? The presenter will share an operationalized copy cataloging workflow. After Acquisitions receives print monographs, key parts of the book are scanned and promptly placed on carts for shelving. Staff copy catalog from the scans which are saved in Box.In Alma this workflow avoids work orders and transit statuses that must be cleared. Instead, the book's location is flipped from a suppressed to unsuppressed location which makes the book available in discovery. The end result: shelf ready books are promptly available to library users.

Authority Customization: Creating and maintaining local authority vocabularies in Alma.Jacqueline Saavedra, Washington Research Library Consortium

Words have power, now more than ever. Unfortunately, our traditional library vocabularies have not always kept up with the cultural environment. Because of this, librarians have been proactively creating and using new, local vocabularies for their records - vocabularies that better meet the needs of their patrons and our culture overall. Yet how can one configure local authority vocabularies in Alma? This presentation will review the use of local authorities in the Washington Research Library Consortium’s Network Zone. In addition, the following workflows will be covered in depth : creating a local authority definition, creating and using an authority import profile, writing normalization rules that add local subject headings, and configuring the use of normalization rules in the Metadata Editor and in import profiles. Metadata librarians and staff will leave with a clear understanding of how to create and implement a local authority vocabulary in their own Alma production environment.
